An advisor’s job isn’t to prepare clients for widowhood, Mattia adds, rather to prepare women for uncertainty. “Widowhood is just one of many life’s transitions. The real value of planning is helping people adapt when the future unfolds differently than expected,” she says. That means encouraging both spouses to make financial decisions, understand household finances, maintain organized records and build confidence as decision-makers. “No one knows which life transition is coming next. Financial planning creates the resilience to adapt when it arrives,” she says.
