CASE STUDY
When a divorce settlement became part of a family’s legacy
A client sought guidance during a difficult divorce and needed help understanding what she was entitled to receive as part of the settlement. After her divorce was finalized, an unexpected tragedy changed the focus from dividing assets to ensuring her wishes and financial arrangements were clearly documented.
A difficult transition with limited financial visibility
During divorce proceedings, the client had limited visibility into the couple’s finances and wasn’t sure which assets she was entitled to receive. The settlement discussions involved a family home, a pension, and retirement savings, all of which carried different financial implications.
With support from her advisor, she worked through her options and reached a settlement that reflected her share of the assets built during the marriage. Shortly after the divorce was finalized, however, the client unexpectedly passed away before a portion of the retirement assets had been distributed. Her family was left navigating both a personal loss and questions surrounding the assets included in the settlement.
Creating clarity through documentation and coordination
Our team worked closely with the client during the divorce process and later helped her family navigate questions that arose after her unexpected passing.
Asset Review
Evaluated the home, retirement accounts, and pension benefits to help the client understand the value of different settlement options.
Settlement Analysis
Reviewed the financial implications of various approaches to dividing marital assets and helped the client understand what she was entitled to receive as part of the divorce settlement.
Retirement Documentation
Coordinated the paperwork necessary to document the retirement assets awarded through the settlement and establish a clear record of ownership.
Family Support
After the client’s passing, worked with family members to review documentation, clarify beneficiary-related questions, and provide guidance as they navigated both personal and financial decisions during a difficult time.
A foundation of clarity during loss
The client’s passing transformed what had been a divorce-planning engagement into a family matter. Because key decisions and documentation had already been addressed, her loved ones were able to focus less on unanswered financial questions and more on supporting one another during a time of loss. The planning process provided a foundation of clarity when it was needed most.
