Keeping Your Financial Affairs
Up-to-Date

As we go through the various stages of our lives—marriage, children, career changes, retirement, and other life-altering events, it’s important to keep your financial affairs up-to-date.

For instance, when was the last time you reviewed your will, power of attorney, and healthcare proxy? Have you had a chance lately to review documents that name you as a beneficiary, such as your parent’s will, family business documents, contracts, or deeds?

If you have a growing family, it’s also important to review your insurance to make sure your current policy would provide adequate coverage.

It would also be helpful to your family if you kept an updated list of your financial accounts—account numbers, contact information and the name of the institution that holds your savings and checking accounts, your insurance and annuity policies, stocks, bonds, mutual funds and other investments, as well as your retirement accounts, real estate records and safe deposit box. If anything should happen to you, by keeping your vital information up-to-date, you’ll make life much easier for your loved ones.

RETIREMENT PLANNING

Budgeting More Money for
Your Investment Program

Has your spending gotten out of control? Do you find yourself spending too much and saving too little for your retirement?

It may be time to create a budget to help you prioritize your spending in order to achieve your savings and investment goals. A budget doesn’t keep you from buying the things you need, but it should set some priorities so that you’re not overspending on unnecessary items.

In order to set up a budget, it might be helpful to review all of your expenditures for the past two or three months and decide the most logical areas to cut back. For instance you might find that you spend too much on meals out, travel, entertainment, clothing, home furnishings, and even toys and electronic games for the children. You can limit those expenditures simply by setting a monthly budget for each category and sticking with it.

The key to building a solid savings plan is to spend what you have left after saving rather to save what you have left after spending.

THOUGHTS FROM BRUCE HELMER

We all wear different hats in our lives. For example, I wear the hats of financial adviser, radio talk show host, founder and president of a financial advisory company, mentor to younger advisers, baseball coach, soccer coach, basketball coach, husband, and father. Wow, when you list them on paper that is a lot of hats! The most important hats I wear are the last two. Nothing in my life is as important to me as my family. They are always my top priority. I think I am a good financial adviser, but I am an even better husband and father (at least I hope I am – maybe you should ask my wife and kids).

I believe the single most important responsibility I will ever have in my lifetime is to help my wife raise honest, ethical, responsible, productive children who become adults that contribute to the society. The only thing I like about getting older is watching my kids blossom and flourish.

By most measuring sticks I have been blessed to achieve a certain level of financial success. If I had not gotten married, I would still probably be playing softball every night and earning just enough money to live on beer and pizza. Getting married and being blessed with happy, healthy children (and I do count my blessings every day – it is easy to take good health for granted) changes one’s perspective and priorities and what they want out of life. At least it did for me.
