Look in the dictionary and you may find these definitions for the word "value":
- Relative worth, merit, or importance: the value of a college education, the value of a queen in chess.
- Monetary or material worth, as in commerce or trade: This piece of land has greatly increased in value.
- The worth of something in terms of the amount of other things for which it can be exchanged or in terms of some medium of exchange.
- Equivalent worth or return in money, material, services, etc.: To give value for the value received.
- Estimated or assigned worth; valuation: a painting with a current value of $500,000.
- Denomination, as of monetary issue or a postage stamp.
You'll see that five of the six meanings of value are related to finances. So it shouldn't be too surprising that when we're thinking about financial matters, we're usually thinking predominantly about monetary value, such as how to make some more of it quickly, or how to avoid losing it. The antidote to this tendency is to focus on the first definition of value, meaning "relative worth, merit, or importance." Values are our life's priorities. They represent the things that are most important to us. Values are the boundaries within which we choose to live our lives.
Financial intelligence helps us support our deepest values: Money matters when we earn it by doing things that are worthy of our time and make a difference to others. Money is valuable, in the best sense of the word, when... MORE |
