Protecting Your Financial Identity

by Gene Walden

Identity theft is a growing problem that can be financially devastating to victims. It can destroy your personal finances as well as your credit history. Here are some steps you can take to avoid identity theft:

  • Don’t give out personal information over the telephone or Internet unless you’re certain of who is requesting it and why.
  • Report stolen or lost checks, credit cards and debit cards immediately.
  • Review all items on your credit card bills and investigate anything suspicious immediately.
  • Safeguard your ATM number and receipts as well as your other PINs and passwords.
  • Don’t leave documents with your personal financial information in your car.
  • Destroy personal financial documents before you discard them into the trash.
